Nairobi is the only capital city in the world with a full-sized national park inside its boundaries. That means you can watch giraffes at breakfast and be at a rooftop jazz bar by dinner. Here's how to do it right — 48 hours, starting and ending at Garden Estate.
Saturday Morning — Wildlife Before Breakfast
Set your alarm for 5:45 AM. Grab an Uber to Nairobi National Park (35 minutes from Garden Estate). Gates open at 6 AM. The morning light is best for photography and the animals are most active before 9 AM. Entry is USD 43 for non-residents; bring a credit card.
You'll likely see lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and 400+ bird species — all with the Nairobi skyline as a backdrop. Back at the apartment by 10 AM for a proper cooked breakfast (our kitchen is fully equipped — the nearby Naivas has everything you need).
Saturday Afternoon — Culture Crawl
12:00 PM: Giraffe Centre & Karen Blixen Museum. Twenty minutes south. Feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes from a raised platform, then walk to Karen Blixen's colonial-era coffee farm (of "Out of Africa" fame).
2:30 PM: Lunch at Talisman, Karen. Widely considered Nairobi's best restaurant. Garden setting, fusion menu, book ahead.
4:30 PM: Maasai Market at Yaya Centre. Saturdays only. Best souvenir shopping in the city — hand-beaded jewelry, wooden carvings, kanga fabrics. Haggle in half your opening price.
Saturday Evening — Sunset + Supper
Back at the apartment by 6:30 PM, uncork a bottle of Kenyan wine (yes, that's a thing now — Leleshwa and Rift Valley are both excellent) and watch the sunset from the balcony. It's why our guests rate the "view" an average 5 stars.
8:00 PM: Walk across to Garden City Mall for dinner at About Thyme (Mediterranean) or Urban Burger (rooftop with city views). Both within 200m of the apartment.
10:00 PM: If you've got energy left, Uber to Brew Bistro (craft beer + live music) or Alchemist in Westlands for Nairobi's best nightlife.
Sunday Morning — Slow Start, Big Breakfast
Sleep in. The kitchen has everything for pancakes, a proper omelette, or continental spread. Pair with Kenyan AA coffee (our welcome pack includes some) and watch the city wake up from the balcony.
Sunday Afternoon — Nature & Art
11:00 AM: Karura Forest. Twelve minutes away. Walk the 1-hour loop past the Mau Mau caves, a colonial-era waterfall, and a picnic area. Entry is KES 200 for Kenyans, KES 600 for non-residents. Pack water.
2:00 PM: Late lunch at The River Café (Karura). Inside the forest. Al fresco dining with perhaps the best ambience in the city.
4:00 PM: Circle Art Gallery or Brush tu Art Studio. Nairobi's contemporary art scene is having a moment — bring home something you won't find anywhere else.
Sunday Evening — Wind Down
Back to the apartment by 6 PM. Hot shower, Netflix on the smart TV, and early bed. Monday morning check-out is whenever suits you — just drop the key in the lock-box.
Pro Tips from Past Guests
- Uber is ~50% cheaper than Bolt on most routes in Nairobi. Use both apps and compare.
- M-Pesa is king — download the app and set up a virtual card before arriving. Most small vendors, Ubers, and even restaurants prefer it over cash or foreign cards.
- Carry KES 500–1000 cash for tips and the occasional cash-only shop.
- Mornings are cool (15–18°C), afternoons warm (23–27°C). Pack layers.
